“The Kariba hydropower station is Zambia’s biggest electricity source. The dam has dropped to 43 percent of capacity from 85 percent last October, as inflows from the Zambezi River that feeds it dwindle. Water outflows through the turbines at Kariba, which shows how much power they’re producing, has been cut by 27 percent this month.”

Background to The Problem

There are many wonderful things about Zambia, but our guaranteed electricity supply and efficient usage is not one of them.

The infrastructure is dated, poorly maintained and reliant on hydroelectricity for at least 90% of our supply. With reduced rainfall due to changing climatic conditions, we experience load shedding and blackouts all too often.

Couple that with energy inefficient electric motors to power our industrial base, we are, for want of a better word, leaking power all over. 100’s of Millions of kWh every year are lost and you and your business suffer.

And, if you own or operate a business in Zambia that consumes 3 Phase Electricity you are the one paying for these problems.

The Increasing Cost of Powering your Business

The demand for electricity in Zambia is increasing rapidly and so is the cost to your business.

In 2015 The Energy Regulation Board approved Zesco’s application to increase your electricity prices by 187 %.

In May 2017 prices increased by 50%.

In September 2017 there was an additional 25% increase.

March 9th 2019 Zesco applied to the Energy Regulation Board for further 75% price increase.

The cost of powering your business is increasing all the time. And that’s before we talk about future potential ‘Charges for Reactive Losses’ and the cost to your business.

Electricity in Zambia is only gonna get more expensive. But there is a solution and now is the time to act.
